Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre (two illustrious writers ) stayed at the Hotel Mistral on several occasions in the 1940s. For their relationship’s sake and to give space to their inspiration, they occupied separate rooms. The hotel is mentioned several times in their books. You can find all of their published writings in our library.

From 1790 to 1850, much of this small neighborhood was the site of an important horticultural farm established by Jacques Philippe Martin Cels (1743-1806), and subsequently managed by his sons and grandsons. Their collection of plants from around the world brought together 4,000 different species.
